RESPONSIBLE MINERAL RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

Since its inception in 1908, MMSA has offered guidance on policy issues ranging from protection of workers and investors to the responsible development of mineral resources on both private and public lands. MMSA was instrumental in the establishment of the former U.S. Bureau of Mines and continues to support legislation and efficient regulatory frameworks that will enable transparency, innovation and job creation without compromising environmental quality and the social license to operate.

MMSA sponsors public and regulatory educational outreach programs and events that address the responsible development of mineral resources. MMSA fosters collaboration by convening multi-stakeholder forums around timely complex issues such as Critical Minerals and its ongoing Abandoned Mine Land Summits.  Several informational webinar series covering a wide spectrum of topics are free to members and the general public.

Additionally, MMSA actively collaborates with other organizations in providing support for legislative reviews as well as preparing white papers and technical information that provides context for policymakers.

PROTECTION OF INVESTORS AND WORKERS

Regulators, investors, host communities and the public must have confidence in the information they are being given about mining projects.  MMSA offers a Qualified Professional class of membership that is globally accepted by the major stock exchanges for public disclosure of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves.  MMSA is also a member of the International Mineral Valuation Committee (IMVAL) whose mission is the harmonization of international mineral valuation codes and standards.

ADVANCEMENT OF THE MINERALS INDUSTRY

MMSA supports mineral industry professionals through professional development programs.  MMSA also recognizes the need for recruitment and retention of the next generation of technical professionals through contributions to education programs, undergraduate and graduate scholarships and a Professional Mentoring program, which is a collaborative effort with other mining organizations.

Increased Scientific Knowledge

MMSA regularly prepares technical briefings and white papers for legislators and the public.  These briefings are on specific technical topics with the purpose of summarizing and presenting the scientific and technical knowledge needed to understand a topic or issue.  To the extent possible, these technical briefings are bi-partisan and independent.
